Trump Calling Out NATO on the War With Iran to Protect the Strait of Hormuz.
President Donald Trump said he has asked several allied nations to deploy naval forces to help protect shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most critical energy routes in the world.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said he had asked “about seven countries” to send ships to the region, arguing that nations benefiting from the waterway should help defend it.
Trump also warned that the future of NATO could be affected if allies fail to respond. “Countries that benefit from the Strait should help protect it,” he said.
European officials say they were not consulted before the conflict began but are now reviewing possible responses.
Leaders in the United Kingdom say they are reviewing options to help protect shipping, while the government of Japan said there has been no decision on sending naval forces.
Defense officials in Australia also said they are assessing the situation before committing any ships to the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global shipping route through which roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply passes.
