Switzerland Vote Could Cap Population at Ten Million
Switzerland will hold a landmark referendum on June 14 to decide whether to cap the nation’s population at 10 million, a radical proposal by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP) that could force the government to end its free-movement agreement with the European Union.
Currently at 9.1 million, the population would trigger automatic restrictions once it reaches 9.5 million, including denying entry to asylum seekers and families of foreign residents.
The SVP, which has finished first in every election since 1999, argues that immigration is causing a “population explosion” that strains infrastructure, public services, and housing.
The party released a provocative AI-generated image showing elites toasting champagne above struggling workers, urging voters to support the measure.
While the SVP stands alone among the seven-seat executive Federal Council in supporting the cap, recent polls suggest significant public backing.
If passed, the initiative would fundamentally reshape Switzerland’s relationship with its largest trading partner and test the limits of European integration.
