The Pentagon is bringing Elon Musk’s AI into US defense

The United States military is entering a new phase of warfare technology after announcing a partnership with Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI.

Under the deal, xAI’s AI model Grok will be integrated into the Pentagon’s GenAI.mil system, giving the US Department of Defense access to one of Silicon Valley’s most advanced large language models across both classified and unclassified military networks.

The move is part of a newly launched “AI acceleration strategy” aimed at speeding up how quickly artificial intelligence can be tested, deployed, and scaled inside the US military.

Defense leaders say future conflicts will be decided not just by weapons, but by who can innovate and adapt the fastest. By linking directly with a major private technology firm, the Pentagon is attempting to reduce bureaucracy and bring commercial AI into military operations at machine speed.

The strategy also introduces a single Chief Technology Officer for the entire War Department, giving one office authority over military innovation and technical direction.
