How PayPal and OpenAI Are Bringing Shopping to ChatGPT

PayPal announced a landmark partnership with OpenAI to become the first payments wallet integrated into ChatGPT, marking a major step in the evolution of AI-powered commerce.

The deal will allow ChatGPT users to purchase products and complete transactions directly within conversations, using PayPal’s Instant Checkout system. Starting next year, merchants will also be able to list and sell products inside ChatGPT, creating a seamless shopping experience that connects PayPal’s 400 million active users with OpenAI’s hundreds of millions of AI chat users.

The integration includes multiple payment options — from cards and bank balances to PayPal buyer protections — and access to post-purchase services such as order tracking and dispute resolution.

PayPal’s shares surged more than 14% after the announcement, reflecting investor optimism over its expanding role in AI-driven retail.

The company joins Walmart, Shopify, and Etsy as part of OpenAI’s growing push into AI-based e-commerce, where users can discover products, chat with AI assistants, and check out instantly.
