Meta to Cut 600 AI Jobs as it Doubles Down on Superintelligence
Meta Platforms has announced the layoff of roughly 600 employees across its Artificial Intelligence divisions, even as it expands efforts to build superintelligent systems.
The cuts, first reported by Axios, will affect Meta’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) unit as well as teams focused on AI products and infrastructure.
However, the company’s TBD Lab — which leads the development of Meta’s latest large language models (LLMs) — remains untouched.
According to a memo from Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, affected employees are being encouraged to apply for other roles within Meta, with many expected to stay.
While Meta continues to invest heavily in AI research, including open-sourcing its flagship “Llama” model, it faces stiff competition from OpenAI and Google.
The company claims over one billion people now use its AI-powered products monthly, but critics argue it trails its rivals in bringing advanced LLMs directly to consumers.
