Major Drone Strike Targets Kurdistan’s Khor Mor Gas Field, Sparks Power Collapse

A powerful drone strike on the Emirati-owned Khor Mor gas complex triggered a major blackout across Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, cutting off gas supplies that fuel most of the region’s electricity.

The attack, which hit gas storage tanks and caused a massive explosion and fire, immediately shut down operations and removed 2,600 megawatts from the grid—roughly 80% of the region’s power.

Cities, including Sulaimaniyah, were plunged into darkness as authorities coordinated with operator Dana Gas to restore service.

Iraq’s Joint Operations Command condemned the strike as an attempt to undermine security and economic stability, while noting that no group has claimed responsibility.

The facility, repeatedly targeted by rockets and drones in recent years, remains at the center of ongoing instability that threatens the region’s vital energy infrastructure.
