Rare Mahatma Gandhi Portrait Sells for $205,000 at London Auction
A 1931 oil painting of Mahatma Gandhi—believed to be the only portrait he ever sat for—has sold at a London auction for £152,800 ($205,000), more than double its estimated value.
Created by British-American artist Clare Leighton during a crucial period in India’s independence movement, the artwork had remained in the artist’s family until now.
Bonhams, the auction house, described the painting as a powerful and rare historical artifact. The identity of the buyer remains unknown.
