Lummis Backs Israel’s Campaign Against Militant Group and Says U.S. Aid to Lebanon Should Be “On the Table”
Senator Cynthia Lummis says the United States should strongly support Israel’s ongoing efforts to target a militant group in Lebanon, arguing the group’s refusal to disarm poses a persistent threat. She notes Lebanon’s complex makeup — divided among Sunni, Shiite, and Christian communities — but emphasizes that the militant group’s Iran-backed presence in the south continues to undermine security in the region.
Lummis points to recent Israeli strikes, including the killing of a top militant leader in Beirut, as evidence that Israel has “very solid intelligence” and is justified in pursuing the group’s leadership. She says the United States should remain “very tolerant” of Israel’s actions and help ensure the group is disarmed rather than allowed to rearm.
When asked about continued U.S. aid to the Lebanese government, Lummis says all options should be considered. Because the militant group is intertwined with Lebanon’s political system, she argues that Congress should be willing to use every tool available — including foreign aid — to pressure the group to disarm and reduce Iran’s influence.
