House Panel Votes to Hold Bill and Hillary Clinton in Contempt
Members of the U.S. House Oversight Committee have voted to advance criminal contempt of Congress referrals involving former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, following their refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas. The committee’s vote does not constitute criminal charges but could lead to a referral to the Department of Justice if the full House of Representatives approves the measure.
Lawmakers say the subpoenas are connected to an investigation into Jeffrey Epstein and seek testimony regarding the Clintons’ past interactions with him. Both Bill and Hillary Clinton have declined to appear, citing legal and procedural objections.
If the full House moves forward, the Justice Department would determine whether any further action is warranted. Legal experts note that contempt referrals do not automatically result in prosecution and that outcomes depend on DOJ review and discretion.
