Gold Toilet with Connection to President Trump Sold for $12.1 Million

A fully functional solid gold toilet created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan has sold for an astonishing $12.1 million at Sotheby’s, making headlines across the art world and beyond.

Designed as a satire of America’s obsession with wealth, the golden toilet was previously displayed at major museums, including the Guggenheim, which once cheekily offered it to President Donald Trump instead of a Van Gogh painting he requested.

Cattelan described the work as a reminder that no matter how luxurious life becomes, everyone ends up using the same humble fixture.

The second version of the toilet became even more infamous after it was stolen from Blenheim Palace in England and never recovered, with authorities believing it was melted down.

Known for provocative pieces, Cattelan also created the pop-culture phenomenon “Comedian,” the $6 million banana duct-taped to a wall that repeatedly spoiled—or was eaten by visitors—during exhibits.

The sale of the golden toilet comes at a time when high-value art auctions are slowing, making its sky-high price even more remarkable.
