Giant Pumpkin Race Floats into Belgian Pond
In the small Belgian town of Kasterlee, an unusual autumn tradition brings together locals, pumpkin growers, and visitors for a spectacle that combines creativity, athleticism, and seasonal celebration.
Since 2008, the town has hosted an annual pumpkin paddling event, where participants hollow out giant pumpkins and use them as makeshift boats to race across a local pond.
Each pumpkin is meticulously prepared with power tools, carefully hollowed and cleaned, and then tested for buoyancy to ensure it floats safely during the relay-style 100-metre race.
Teams compete with precision and balance, paddling across the water while spectators cheer from the shore.
Visitors like Nathalie Van Nijlen marvel at both the size of the pumpkins and the skill required to navigate them, while organizers highlight the fun and community spirit behind the quirky festival.
Over the years, the event has grown in popularity, blending local agricultural pride with playful sporting competition and drawing attention to Kasterlee’s scenic landscapes and tight-knit community.
