Cheese Recall: Walmart, Target, Aldi Products Pulled for Potential Metal Risk

More than 1.5 million bags of shredded cheese distributed across 31 U.S. states and Puerto Rico have been recalled after Great Lakes Cheese Co., an Ohio-based manufacturer, alerted retailers to possible metal contamination originating from supplier raw materials, according to FDA records.

The recall, first initiated on October 3 and classified by the FDA as active as of December 1, affects mozzarella, Italian-style blends, pizza blends, and other mozzarella-based mixes sold under numerous private and national labels.

Impacted brands listed in regulator documentation include Great Value, Borden, Always Save, Brookshire’s, Cache Valley Creamery, Coburn Farms, Happy Farms, Good & Gather, Freedom’s Choice, Gold Rush Creamery, Econo, and others.

The products were widely available at Walmart, Target, Aldi, and additional chains, with sell-by dates ranging from January to March 2026 depending on brand and formulation.

All items fall under a Class II recall, assigned when a product may pose a health risk that could cause temporary or medically reversible harm but is not considered to be generally life-threatening.

Consumers are urged to avoid eating any of the affected cheese products and either discard them or return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
