Chaos After Mexico’s Most Wanted Kingpin Killed in Raid
Mexico’s most wanted drug lord, Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, leader of the brutal Jalisco New Generation Cartel, has been killed in a major military operation that triggered waves of retaliatory violence across the country.
The 59-year-old was wounded in a clash with soldiers in Tapalpa, Jalisco, and died while being airlifted to Mexico City.
The raid, supported by US intelligence, also killed six cartel gunmen and wounded three soldiers.
In response, cartel gunmen blocked more than 20 roads, burning vehicles and prompting at least eight states to suspend in-person classes.
The violence spread to Michoacan and the resort city of Puerto Vallarta, leading US and Canadian airlines to cancel dozens of flights and the State Department to urge Americans to “shelter in place.”
Oseguera, who had a $15 million US bounty, led one of Mexico’s most violent trafficking organizations, flooding the US with fentanyl, heroin, and methamphetamine.
His death marks the biggest takedown of a Mexican drug lord since “El Chapo” Guzman, but his cartel’s ferocious response shows the battle is far from over.
