Candy Costs Go Boo Ahead of Halloween! Prices Spook Shoppers

Halloween candy is getting significantly more expensive this year, leaving shoppers feeling the pinch just as the holiday approaches.

A 100-count bag of assorted candy that cost about $9 five years ago now sells for roughly $16, a dramatic increase fueled by record-high cocoa prices, poor harvests in West Africa, and climate-related challenges such as rising temperatures, irregular rainfall, and crop diseases.

Cocoa trees take four to five years to mature, meaning prices won’t ease quickly.

At the same time, general manufacturing costs for candy — including energy, labor, and transportation — have risen 37% since early 2024, impacting chocolate and non-chocolate treats alike.

Candy makers are adjusting recipes to reduce cocoa content or add lower-cost ingredients such as caramel and nuts, while consumers are relying on coupons, promotions, and early sales to stretch their budgets.

Despite the rising prices, Halloween candy remains a top priority for 73% of Americans celebrating the holiday, with candy sales projected to reach $3.9 billion this year.

Experts say that careful planning, creative shopping strategies, and awareness of deals can help families enjoy the season without breaking the bank.
