What is behind Australia’s decision to ban Iranian visitors?
Australia has announced a temporary ban on visitors from Iran, with restrictions set to remain in place for six months, according to the Department of Home Affairs.
The government said the decision was taken in the “national interest” amid rapidly evolving conditions linked to the ongoing war in the Middle East.
Officials stated that the conflict has increased the risk that some Iranian passport holders traveling on short-term visas may be unable or unlikely to leave Australia when their visas expire.
As a result, the policy applies even to individuals who had already been granted visitor visas but are currently outside the country.
The government said the measure is designed to allow time to assess the situation while maintaining flexibility. Exemptions remain in place for Iranian citizens already in Australia, those in transit, as well as immediate family members of Australian citizens and permanent residents.
Additional exemptions may also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Authorities indicated that the policy could be adjusted depending on how the conflict develops.
