After Trump Call, Australia Grants Visas to Iranian Women Players

Five players from Iran’s women’s national football team have been granted humanitarian visas to remain in Australia after requesting asylum during the AFC Women’s Asian Cup tournament.

The players were part of the Iranian squad competing in the tournament when reports emerged that several members feared returning to Iran.

According to Australian officials, the athletes asked for protection citing concerns about possible persecution if they returned home. Australia’s Home Affairs Minister said the players were informed that they were welcome to stay in the country and would be safe there. The government also indicated that other members of the team could apply to remain if they wished.

Media reports said the five players left the team hotel on the Gold Coast with assistance from Australian police. The rest of the squad remains in Australia while decisions about their travel plans are still being discussed.

The situation gained international attention after U.S. President Donald Trump said he had spoken with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about the case. Trump later said the Australian leader was handling the matter carefully given the sensitivity of the situation.
