American Journalist Abducted in Baghdad Amid Rising Tensions

Disturbing developments have emerged from Baghdad, where American journalist Shelly Kittleson was reportedly abducted while on the street.

Kittleson, a freelance reporter who has contributed to Al-Monitor, had been covering developments in Iraq. According to reports, the U.S. Department of State had recently warned her that she may have been on a list of potential targets.

The suspected abductors are believed to be Shiite militias aligned with Iran, raising concerns about the broader security situation as regional tensions escalate.

The incident has drawn comparisons to the period between 2004 and 2010, when kidnappings of foreigners—including journalists—were more frequent in Baghdad, often involving ransom demands or political leverage.

In recent years, security conditions in the city had improved, allowing more foreign journalists and visitors to operate with fewer risks. However, the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the influence of Iran-aligned militias have raised fears that such threats may be returning.

For now, there is growing concern for Kittleson’s safety, alongside hopes for her safe and swift return.
