What to know about the 82nd Airborne Division in the Middle East
The United States is preparing to send thousands of additional troops to the Middle East, according to sources cited by Reuters, as part of a broader military buildup during the ongoing conflict.
The deployment is expected to include between 3,000 and 4,000 soldiers from the US Army’s elite 82nd Airborne Division, a rapid-response unit based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
The 82nd Airborne Division is designed for fast deployment and can mobilize within 18 hours, specializing in parachute operations and high-risk missions in frontline environments. The additional troops would join an estimated 50,000 US personnel already stationed across the region.
Officials say the move is intended to expand operational flexibility and strengthen US capabilities in the Middle East. However, no decision has been made to deploy ground troops inside Iran itself.
The troop buildup comes at a time when both military and diplomatic options remain under consideration.
