Why Millions Are Dating Inside Mobile Games
Mobile romance simulation games are gaining global popularity, especially in China, where millions of players interact with fictional partners inside story-driven apps.
One of the largest titles in the genre has around 80 million users, according to industry research estimates. Players can choose from several virtual characters and build relationships through conversations, interactive storylines, and digital dates, while their own in-game avatar can be created using their real face and voice.
The genre, known as “otome,” first emerged in Japan in the 1990s and has expanded internationally alongside the rapid growth of the gaming industry.
Industry data indicates that the game has generated hundreds of millions of dollars worldwide, with the majority of revenue coming from China. Analysts say the trend reflects both technological innovation and broader social changes, including rising economic independence among women and growing demand for personalized digital experiences.
Some commentators have raised concerns about the social effects of virtual relationships, while researchers say such platforms may simply meet emotional needs for certain users.
