U.S. and Iran Prepare for Talks as Oman Hosts Diplomatic Effort
The United States and Iran are expected to resume diplomatic talks later this week in Muscat, Oman, following months of uncertainty and stalled engagement. Discussions have been described as “on again” after repeated delays, though major disagreements remain over what issues should be addressed.
U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have indicated Washington wants to expand talks beyond Iran’s nuclear program to include ballistic missiles, regional proxy groups, and Iran’s treatment of its own people. Those demands could complicate negotiations before they even begin.
Oman will serve as the mediator, a role it has played successfully in the past. With strong relationships with both Tehran and Washington, Oman is seen as one of the few countries capable of facilitating dialogue and potentially opening a narrow path toward progress.
