What to Know About the $6.4B U.S.–Canada Bridge Project
President Trump has threatened to block the opening of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, a major infrastructure project connecting Windsor, Ontario and Detroit, Michigan.
The bridge, which spans the Detroit River, is one of the largest cross-border transportation investments in North America and is expected to strengthen trade, ease congestion and improve supply chain efficiency between the United States and Canada.
Construction began in 2018 after years of negotiations between the two countries. The project was financed by Canada after the United States declined to fund it. While Canada covered the construction costs — estimated at 6.4 billion Canadian dollars — ownership of the bridge is shared between the Government of Canada and the State of Michigan.
The bridge has been designated an official U.S. port of entry and is expected to open once final testing and regulatory approvals are complete. However, Trump has argued that the United States should receive greater compensation or shared authority over the project before it opens, raising uncertainty about the timeline.
Officials in Michigan and Canada have emphasized the bridge’s economic importance and its role in facilitating trade across one of the busiest commercial corridors in North America.
