Eyes on Every Corner: World’s Most Surveilled Cities in 2026
A new global ranking of urban surveillance reveals that Indian cities have become the most monitored metropolitan areas in the world. Leading the pack is Hyderabad, which boasts a staggering 79 CCTV cameras per 1,000 residents, followed by Indore at 72 and Bangalore at 41.
This massive infrastructure investment is part of a broader trend across Asia, with Lahore, Pakistan, and Seoul, South Korea, also appearing in the top five most surveilled locations. While authorities in these cities credit the high density of cameras—reaching nearly 900,000 in Hyderabad alone—with significant drops in crime rates and improved emergency response times, the data has sparked a heated global debate regarding the balance between public safety and individual privacy.
As Western cities like London and Los Angeles also expand their monitoring networks, the reality of a “transparent” urban existence is becoming a defining feature of modern life.
