Why Iran’s South Pars Strike Matters Globally
The conflict in the Middle East has reached a critical tipping point following Israeli strikes on the South Pars gas field, the largest natural gas reservoir in the world.
Located in the Persian Gulf and shared between Iran and Qatar, the field is a cornerstone of global energy security, holding an estimated 51 trillion cubic metres of gas.
The attacks targeted refineries and storage tanks, marking the first time Iranian energy infrastructure has been directly hit in this conflict.
While the strategic goal is to drain the Iranian government’s war chest, the immediate impact includes a 5% surge in Brent crude prices to over $110 a barrel and a total halt of gas exports to Iraq.
With Qatar condemning the “irresponsible” escalation and Iran vowing to retaliate against neighboring energy sites, the global economy faces a looming supply crisis.
