USS Massachusetts: A New US Navy Submarine Joins the Fleet
The USS Massachusetts has officially joined the US Navy fleet following a commissioning ceremony in Boston, marking a new addition to the Virginia-class fast attack submarine program.
It is the first submarine named after the state and the fifth US Navy vessel overall to carry the name Massachusetts.
Designed for modern naval operations, the submarine can dive to depths greater than 800 feet and is equipped to carry up to 24 Tomahawk cruise missiles.
The vessel weighs around 8,000 tons and cost more than $2.8 billion to build, reflecting the scale of investment in advanced naval capabilities.
The USS Massachusetts has a crew of 147 sailors, about 25% of whom are women, highlighting a continued shift toward more inclusive, gender-integrated crews in the US Navy.
This follows earlier policy changes that lifted restrictions on women serving on submarines, as well as design updates to support mixed-gender teams.
As global tensions continue to evolve, the addition of the USS Massachusetts underscores the role of advanced submarines in US military strategy and maritime security.
