Trump Removes Noem as DHS Secretary

President Donald Trump has removed Kristi Noem as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and announced that Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma will take over the position beginning March 31.

Trump said Noem will instead serve as Special Envoy for the “Shield of the Americas,” a new regional security initiative.

The leadership change comes days after a tense Senate hearing in which lawmakers questioned Noem about a $220 million DHS advertising campaign promoting border security that prominently featured the secretary herself. During the hearing, Noem testified that Trump approved the ads, but the president later said he had not authorized them.

Noem had also faced scrutiny following a recent ICE-related shooting incident in Minneapolis. The move marks a significant reshuffling of leadership at DHS.
