Thanksgiving Travel Surge Hits Record Levels Across the U.S.

Millions of Americans are on the move this Thanksgiving week. According to AAA, an estimated 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home, an increase of more than 1.6 million from last year. Nearly 90 percent of travelers — about 73 million — are hitting the road, with peak congestion expected Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday across major metro corridors.

Air travel is also reaching its highest levels in 15 years, despite a slight dip in bookings following the recent federal government shutdown. Flight delays and capacity reductions have pushed some travelers to opt for road or rail instead.

Top destinations include major hubs like New York City, while roughly 18 percent of travelers are heading abroad. Weather hazards loom, with a cold wave sweeping the Rockies and Plains and storms threatening the South. Officials are urging early check-ins, caution, and patience as the holiday rush accelerates.
