Europe’s Loudest Contest: Seagull Screeching Championship
The Belgian coastal town of De Panne became a hub for avian enthusiasts and eccentric performers this past Sunday for the sixth annual European seagull screeching championship.
Over 70 participants from 15 different nations converged in a local pub to showcase their best imitations of the seagull’s distinctive and often polarizing shriek.
The competition, which welcomed participants of all ages ranging from young children to adults, encourages contestants to dress in costume and perform with flair.
A dedicated jury awarded points based on both the accuracy of the sound and the “bird-like” behavior of the performers.
Beyond the humor and fun, event organizers aim to rehabilitate the public image of seagulls, moving away from their reputation as intrusive pests and reminding the public that they are a vital, beautiful part of the coastal ecosystem.
