Robots Join Airport Staff in Japan’s Labor Crunch

Japan Airlines (JAL) has announced a groundbreaking two-year trial at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport, introducing humanoid robots to assist with ground operations starting in May.

This initiative comes as a strategic response to Japan’s dual crisis of an aging workforce and a significant labor shortage within the aviation sector.

As tourism reaches unprecedented levels—with over 3.4 million visitors recorded in February 2026—the demand for efficient baggage handling and aircraft maintenance has surged beyond human capacity.

During a recent media demonstration, JAL showcased how these robots can effectively manage heavy lifting and cabin cleaning, potentially alleviating the physical strain on human employees.

This trial represents a major leap in integrating automation into the travel experience, aiming to maintain Japan’s high hospitality standards despite demographic challenges.
