Record-breaking EU Wildfires Scorch Over 1 Million Hectares

Europe is experiencing its most destructive wildfire season on record, with over one million hectares burned across the EU in 2025. Spain, Portugal, Cyprus, Germany, and Slovakia are among the worst-hit, while fires in southern France and Romania have also caused significant damage. Authorities continue battling flames, with AFP reporting 10 deaths so far. EFFIS data shows these fires have already emitted 35 megatons of CO2, raising concerns that 2017’s emissions record of 41 megatons may be surpassed. Experts warn that rising temperatures and prolonged dry conditions are increasing the frequency and severity of wildfires across Europe.
