Race to Save Stranded Whale in Germany
A dramatic private rescue mission for a 13.5-meter humpback whale stranded off Germany’s Baltic coast has reached a critical turning point.
The whale, affectionately nicknamed “Timmy” by the public, first became stuck on a sandbank near Luebeck in late March and has since struggled through a weakened state that led many officials to believe his death was inevitable.
However, a bold new plan proposed by two entrepreneurs was recently approved, utilizing specialized inflatable cushions and pontoons to lift and transport the giant mammal to safer waters.
Environment Minister Till Backhaus noted on Friday that the whale is showing surprising levels of activity and tail movement, suggesting his condition is better than previously suspected.
While the rescue team is proceeding with extreme caution to minimize stress on the animal, the mission has become a national sensation in Germany, sparking both public demonstrations of support and intense pressure on local authorities to ensure the whale’s return to his natural Atlantic habitat.
