Nowruz Around the World… From Mountains to Tables and Music

Nowruz, the “New Day,” is a monumental cultural festival celebrated by over 300 million people across the globe, from the peaks of Kurdistan to the vibrant cities of Central Asia.

Beginning on the spring equinox, the holiday takes on unique local forms while maintaining a universal theme of rebirth and renewal.

In Kurdistan, massive bonfires light up the mountains to symbolize freedom and the end of winter, while in Afghanistan, the holiday serves as an essential agricultural marker for the new planting season.

In Iran, families gather around the symbolic Haft-Seen table, and in nations like Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan, the air is filled with traditional music and public performances.

Officially recognized by UNESCO in 2009 and designated as an international day by the UN in 2010, Nowruz remains a powerful testament to shared human history and the enduring hope for a peaceful start to the year.
