Israel Envoy Sees Opening for Peace With Lebanon
Yechiel Leiter said recent regional developments have created what he described as a real opportunity for peace between Israel and Lebanon following rare direct talks hosted in Washington.
Speaking after meetings at the U.S. Department of State with Marco Rubio and Nada Hamadeh Moawad, Leiter said the weakening of Hezbollah had helped open the door to direct negotiations between the two countries for the first time in more than three decades.
Leiter also pointed to broader regional changes involving Iran’s influence, arguing that recent military pressure on Iranian-backed groups created conditions for Lebanon’s government to take what he described as “bold steps” toward diplomacy with Israel.
He credited leadership from Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu with shaping the environment that made the talks possible, saying the moment could lead to a future where Israelis and Lebanese live “side by side in peace.”
Leiter added that normalization between the two countries is no longer theoretical, describing it as an outcome that could realistically occur within the current generation if negotiations continue.
