Iraq Raises Border Alert After IS Prison Break in Syria
Following the mass escape of Islamic State terrorists from Syria’s Shaddadi prison, Iraq has placed its security forces on “maximum alert” along the entire western border with Syria, deploying aerial surveillance sorties to prevent the crisis from spilling over.
The Iraqi Minister of Defense has asserted that the borders are under full control and that Baghdad is closely monitoring the situation, aiming to ensure the movements of escaped IS elements do not destabilize Iraq’s security.
This urgent response comes after Iraqi forces recently demonstrated their vigilance by arresting one of IS’ most dangerous leaders in the Nineveh province, who had infiltrated from Syria and was responsible for commanding terrorist cells and planning operations.
Amid the internal conflict and security vacuum in Syria, Iraq is now focused on a critical containment strategy, working to stop escaped veterans from crossing the border and reactivating dormant sleeper cells, which could trigger a renewed wave of terrorism within its own provinces.
