Iraq Qualifies for World Cup After 40-Year Wait

Iraq has secured its place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Bolivia 2–1 in the intercontinental playoff final, ending a 40-year absence from the tournament.

The victory marks a significant milestone for Iraqi football, with the national team returning to the world’s biggest stage for the first time since 1986.

The match took place in Mexico, one of the host nations for the upcoming World Cup, and was closely contested throughout. Iraq’s qualification comes despite logistical challenges faced by the team in the lead-up to the game, including travel disruptions linked to ongoing regional tensions.

The squad had limited time to prepare after arriving shortly before the match, making the result even more notable.

Iraq will now compete in Group I alongside France, Norway, and Senegal in the expanded 48-team tournament, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The team’s return to the World Cup is being celebrated by fans across the country and beyond, marking a moment of national pride and a new chapter for Iraqi football on the global stage.
