IEA Releases 400M Barrels as Hormuz Crisis Disrupts Supply

The International Energy Agency announced it will release about 400 million barrels of oil from global emergency stockpiles as the conflict involving Iran disrupts one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly 20% of global oil passes, has been largely shut down due to military action in the region. Iran claims control of the strait and has reportedly attacked several cargo ships traveling through the waterway.

Gasoline prices in the United States have already surged by around 20%, putting additional pressure on policymakers to stabilize energy markets.

A significant portion of the oil release will come from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, which the Trump administration is tapping to ease fuel prices for American consumers.

Even Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has urged the use of emergency reserves, highlighting rare bipartisan agreement on energy security.

Experts note that while the release can provide short-term relief, continued conflict and shipping disruptions may require additional measures to stabilize global oil markets.
