A humanoid robot steps into the world of classical music

Humanoid robot Sophia the Robot made her classical music debut in Hong Kong, performing alongside the Hong Kong Baptist University Symphony Orchestra in an AI-themed concert that explored the intersection of technology and art.

Wearing a gold sequinned gown, Sophia performed three original songs — “Human Grace,” “I Am Your Mirror,” and “Wires and Steel” — marking the first time the robot has taken part in a live orchestral performance.

Known for her lifelike facial expressions and media appearances, Sophia’s transition into classical music required significant development, particularly in adapting her voice to a new style while maintaining her distinct character.

The concert combined traditional and modern elements, featuring AI-generated visuals, motion-capture technology, and a performance that blended human dance with a virtual avatar. Organizers said the goal was to blur the boundaries between human creativity and machine capability.

During the performance, Sophia addressed the audience, expressing a desire to connect through music despite not experiencing emotions in the same way as humans.
