Greece Coordinates Rare Evacuation Flight Including Animals

As conflict-related disruptions continue to affect air travel across the Middle East, Greece organized a special evacuation flight to assist its citizens stranded in the region, along with their pets.

The flight departed from Abu Dhabi and arrived in Athens, carrying 101 passengers and 45 animals, including dogs and cats.

The war has led to repeated airspace closures and widespread flight cancellations across major transit hubs, including cities that typically serve as key connections for international travel. As a result, thousands of travelers have been left stranded or faced significant delays in leaving the region.

Passengers on the evacuation flight said that finding transport options that allow animals—either in the cabin or in cargo—has been extremely difficult. Many standard evacuation routes and commercial flights do not accommodate pets, creating additional challenges for those trying to leave conflict-affected areas.

The operation required coordination between multiple Greek government bodies to ensure both passengers and their animals could travel together.

It also reflects a broader logistical issue facing evacuation efforts, where moving people is prioritized, while options for transporting animals remain limited under current conditions.
