Disney reimagines iconic songs through sign language

Disney Animation has introduced a new project that reimagines some of its most popular songs in American Sign Language, marking National Deaf History Month.

The initiative brings tracks like “We Don’t Talk About Bruno,” “Beyond,” and “The Next Right Thing” to life through performances by artists from Deaf West Theatre, whose movements were used as the basis for animation.

The songs are part of a Disney+ release that combines the ASL performances with behind-the-scenes footage, offering insight into the creative process.

The project aims to challenge the assumption that deaf audiences do not engage with music, instead highlighting how rhythm, expression and movement can convey meaning beyond sound.

The production involved translating lyrics into ASL, rehearsing performances, and capturing them from multiple angles before integrating them into animation. Particular attention was given to facial expressions and body language, which are central to sign language communication.

Creators say the project was also about building connections and expanding accessibility, with the potential to influence future storytelling approaches. The result is a reinterpretation of familiar songs that emphasizes emotion, movement and inclusivity.
