DC Cherry Blossoms Reach Peak Bloom

Cherry blossoms in Washington, D.C. have reached peak bloom, drawing thousands of visitors to the National Mall for one of the city’s most iconic seasonal events.

The National Park Service defines peak bloom as the moment when 70% of the Yoshino cherry blossoms are open. In 2026, that milestone was officially reached on March 26.

Crowds gathered across the Tidal Basin and surrounding areas to view the blossoms at their fullest, marking a highlight of the annual spring tradition that attracts visitors from around the world.

The cherry trees trace back to a 1912 gift of approximately 3,000 trees from Japan to the United States, symbolizing friendship between the two nations.

Looking ahead, hundreds of additional cherry trees gifted in 2024 are expected to be planted as part of celebrations for the nation’s 250th birthday, further expanding the historic display.
