From wallets to warfare: Crypto funds drones in Russia and Iran
Cryptocurrency is playing a growing role in modern conflicts, as new reporting shows it is being used to finance the purchase of low-cost military drones and related components.
According to Reuters, a report by blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis found that groups linked to Russia and Iran have used crypto donations to acquire drones through online platforms.
These commercially available drones have become a key tool in conflicts such as Ukraine and across parts of the Middle East, due to their accessibility and relatively low cost.
Since 2022, pro-Russia groups have raised more than $8.3 million in cryptocurrency, some of which has been traced directly to drone purchases. Researchers were able to follow these transactions on the blockchain, linking digital wallets to specific purchases that matched the price of drones and parts sold on e-commerce sites.
While crypto-linked procurement remains a small share of overall military spending, analysts say it introduces new complexities for monitoring conflict financing.
At the same time, blockchain transparency also offers investigators a way to track transactions that might otherwise remain hidden.
