Meta Adopts X’s Algorithm for Its ‘Community Notes’ Fact-Checking Tool

Meta has announced that its new “Community Notes” feature, designed to replace third-party fact-checkers, will use the open-source algorithm developed by Elon Musk’s X.

The move, revealed by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in January, follows years of conservative criticism that fact-checking efforts suppressed legitimate viewpoints under the guise of misinformation control.

While the change has been welcomed by former U.S. President Donald Trump and his supporters, misinformation experts warn it could contribute to the spread of false claims online.

Meta stated that adopting X’s technology will help improve the feature over time and that notes will only be published if contributors from diverse perspectives agree on their accuracy.

Beta testing begins on March 18, with 200,000 contributors already signed up. The feature will first launch in the U.S. before expanding globally.
